How is Homeopathy different?
Homeopathy is a wholistic system of medicine, which is different
from modern medicine because it is working on the whole child
and not just on one symptom. For example, if a child with
eczema is treated with Homeopathy we expect the skin to get
better at the same time as sleeping and eating improve, and
that other characteristics of the child like fear of the dark
will lessen. Homeopathy works on emotional problems such as
anxieties, fears, night terrors, obsessive behaviour and difficult
social interactions with friends or siblings as well as working
on physical conditions.
Homeopathy is different because the Homeopathic medicine
(remedy) is chosen on a highly individual basis. Each child
with eczema will receive a different remedy according to their
individual characteristics. A hot, restless and bossy child
with dry eczema that is very itchy at night will receive a
completely different remedy to a child who weeps easily, is
sensitive to the cold and has a moist eczema which bleeds
easily on scratching.
Homeopathy is different because it tastes good. It’s
easy to administer to babies, toddlers and children. In fact
many children say, “It’s time for my remedy again,
mum!”
Homeopathy is different because it doesn’t have the
side effects of modern medicine. This is because only trace
amounts of the active ingredient are used in a specially prepared
form. After more than 200 years of Homeopathic prescribing,
as recorded in journals around the world, it has been consistently
shown that Homeopathy is a highly effective system of medicine.
Homeopathy treats children’s everyday problems such
as fevers, headaches, coughs and tummy upsets, and ongoing
problems such as asthma, fears and behaviour issues.
Homeopathy is different because it’s not tested on
animals. Homeopathy students are involved in a proving (research)
as part of their training, so that Homeopaths can rightly
declare that Homeopathy is not tested on rats, “it is
tested on us”.

What’s the difference between
Naturopathy and Homeopathy?
Naturopathy is an umbrella term used to include many different
natural therapies like herbs, supplements, massage, diet,
iridology etc and may include some Homeopathy as well. Homeopathy,
however, is a specialist natural therapy and a separate practice
in its own right.

Can Homeopathy help serious problems?
Children with serious problems can use Homeopathy to support
them while they are taking orthodox medication. For example:
a child would continue taking their epilepsy medication while
they have a Homeopathic remedy to help them sleep better,
reduce their worries, or get their appetite back, without
interfering with their medical treatment.

What methods of Homeopathy do you
use?
A solid background of traditional constitutional or classic
prescribing is the mainstay of our practice. However this
clinic recognises the importance of modern homeopathic prescribing
and incorporates the ideas and methods of the following modern
homeopaths where appropriate: Sankaran, Herscu and the level
four remedies, Tinus Smits and his work on a modern interpretation
of Saccharum and Lac maternum and Isaac Golden and his work
on homoeoprophylaxis.

What kinds of remedies are used?
There are different stages of treatment. We may prescribe
an acute remedy for an ear problem, then a boost remedy to
strengthen the child and finally a constitutional remedy for
ongoing care.
- Constitutional remedy – given according
to the temperament of the child.
- Boost remedy – given according
to inherited tendencies so as to boost the child’s
immunity.
- Acute remedy – given when a recent
problem like the flu or an earache needs treating.

What can I expect after a remedy?
A. Most children take the remedy and it works, then wears
off a little and is repeated a few times with a stronger dose
each time. The longer that the complaint has existed the more
times the remedy will be repeated. In a chronic complaint
like asthma, eczema or ADHD in many cases at least three months
is needed before a stable plateau is reached. Year old problems
are not fixed in a few weeks. Be patient! In the long term
it is much better to use Homeopathy to work from the inside
out, rather than merely relieving or suppressing symptoms.

B. All children respond to the remedies in different ways
so treatment will often be started in a gentle way to accommodate
these differences. When a gentle starting dose is used it
is expected that definite improvement may not be noticed until
after the second dose at the follow up appointment.

C. Some children take the remedy and just keep getting better.

D. As a result of the body healing itself, some children
take the remedy and have to go through a process of flushing
out before they get better. This is a positive response. Sometimes
an old symptom or a rash, a runny nose, a dream, or feeling
clingy and weepy, may appear as a part of the “spring
cleaning” before they start to show improvement.

How often should my child have an
appointment?
Acute complaints may need a follow up appointment in a few
days or a week, to check whether the acute remedy needs to
be changed to a constitutional remedy. Chronic complaints
will usually be reviewed every 3 to 4 weeks. As the child
gets better the appointments will be less frequent. Once well,
children benefit from a check up every 6 months.
